- The oscillator performances in combination with the period of synchronization messages, servo control, and PDV filtering algorithm has major influence on the accuracy of the PTP IEEE-1588 overall system.
- Network topology and PTP clock hierarchy also play critical role in local node oscillator selection.

- Each applications in Packet Networks must meet specific synchronization requirements and in some cases relevant industry standards.
- Each of the applications have very different oscillator requirements.
- Product designers must find a balance between the desired performance and the cost of the oscillator.
- Generally, for any IEEE-1588 applications key oscillator parameters are:
- Standard frequency stability (Frequency vs. Temperature and Aging).
- Phase Noise and Jitter
- Short and Medium term stability (ADEV or MTIE/TDEV).
- In some less sync constrained IEEE-1588 applications the standard Ethernet type XO with ±20ppm frequency stability is good enough.
- More sync constrained IEEE-1588 applications such as Telecom, Audio and video networks requires oscillators that meet specific short and medium term stability.
