Oscillator Requirements for IEEE-1588

  • The oscillator performances in combination with the period of synchronization messages, servo control, and PDV filtering algorithm has major influence on the accuracy of the PTP IEEE-1588 overall system.
  • Network topology and PTP clock hierarchy also play critical role in local node oscillator selection.
  • PTP IEEE-1588 is used in different applications:

  • Each applications in Packet Networks must meet specific synchronization requirements and in some cases relevant industry standards.
  • Each of the applications have very different oscillator requirements.
  • Product designers must find a balance between the desired performance and the cost of the oscillator.
  • Generally, for any IEEE-1588 applications key oscillator parameters are:

 

  • Standard frequency stability (Frequency vs. Temperature and Aging).
  • Phase Noise and Jitter
  • Short and Medium term stability (ADEV or MTIE/TDEV).

 

  • In some less sync constrained IEEE-1588 applications the standard Ethernet type XO with ±20ppm frequency stability is good enough.
  • More sync constrained IEEE-1588 applications such as Telecom, Audio and video networks requires oscillators that meet specific short and medium term stability.
  • Telecommunication wire line applications requirements are defined by industry synchronization standards such as:

  • ITU-T G.812/G.813,
  • ITU-T G.8261/G.826
